Hands-on treatment for sciatica

Sciatica is one of our clinic's specialities — pain that travels from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg, often accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness. It can be sudden and severe, or a persistent ache that flares up unpredictably, and it's one of the most misunderstood pain conditions we see. At our clinic, we go beyond the label to properly diagnose what's actually causing your sciatica, then build a treatment plan around you — drawing on the most appropriate combination of hands-on therapy, targeted rehabilitation, and advanced treatments available across our clinic, to relieve your symptoms and address the real cause.

Does this describe you?

  • You've been told you have "sciatica," but no one's really explained why it's happening
  • Pain shoots from your lower back through your buttock, and sometimes down into your leg or foot
  • Sitting for long periods makes it worse, and standing up afterwards is genuinely painful
  • You've noticed numbness, tingling, or a "pins and needles" feeling down your leg
  • Your leg has started to feel weak, or like it might give way
  • Coughing, sneezing, or bending forward makes the pain suddenly worse
  • It came on gradually, or it came on suddenly after lifting, twisting, or a specific movement
  • You've tried rest, painkillers, or stretching, but the pain keeps coming back

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone — and it's exactly what we help patients with, every day.

DIAGNOSIS

Eight types of sciatica we treat.

Each one needs a different treatment approach — which is why the first appointment exists to identify exactly which is yours.

Disc-Related Sciatica

Caused by a herniated or bulging disc pressing directly on the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots, often the most well-known cause of sciatica and one that responds well to targeted treatment.

Piriformis Syndrome

Caused by tightness or spasm in the piriformis muscle, deep in the buttock, which can irritate or compress the sciatic nerve as it passes beneath or through it — often mistaken for disc-related sciatica.

Spinal Stenosis-Related Sciatica

Caused by narrowing of the spinal canal, placing pressure on the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve, typically worsened by standing or walking and eased by sitting or leaning forward.

Facet Joint-Related Sciatica

Caused by irritation or inflammation of the small joints in the lower spine, which can refer pain into the buttock and leg in a pattern that closely mimics true nerve-root sciatica.

Degenerative Sciatica

Caused by age-related changes to the discs and joints of the lower spine, gradually reducing the space available for the nerve roots and leading to intermittent or chronic sciatic symptoms.

Postural and Muscular Sciatica

Caused or aggravated by prolonged sitting, poor posture, or muscular imbalance, placing indirect pressure or strain on the nerve pathway without true disc involvement.

Pregnancy-Related Sciatica

Caused by postural changes, weight distribution, and pressure from the growing uterus during pregnancy, requiring a specifically adapted and carefully considered treatment approach.

Sports and Exercise-Related Sciatica

Caused by overuse, muscular imbalance, or acute injury during sport or exercise, often involving the piriformis or surrounding muscles rather than the disc itself.

— OUR APPROACH —

How we can help.

"Sciatica" isn't actually a diagnosis — it's a description. It simply means pain travelling into the leg, without explaining why it's happening. We see patients all the time who've been told they have sciatica, given painkillers or rest, and sent on their way, with no real understanding of the underlying cause. The problem with that approach is simple: if you don't know why it's happening, you can't properly treat it, and you can't prevent it happening again.

That's exactly why proper diagnosis matters, and it's one of our clinic's specialities. Sciatica can be caused by a disc problem, a tight piriformis muscle, spinal joint irritation, or several other causes entirely — each requiring a different treatment approach. Our practitioners are experienced specifically in identifying which of these is actually driving your symptoms, using a thorough clinical assessment (and imaging, where appropriate) to get a real answer, not just a label.

We promise meaningful, hands-on treatment from your very first appointment — care designed to bring soothing relief while we get to the root of what's actually causing your sciatica, not just settle for easing the symptom in front of us. Depending on your diagnosis, this may combine osteopathy, physiotherapy, dry needling, or IDD Therapy, so treatment is built around your specific cause, not a generic sciatica protocol.
